Colchester General Hospital
Poly GRC provided superior drainage and high loading performance for the new staff car park at Colchester General Hospital.
In brief
Colchester General Hospital expanded its car parking facilities with the addition of a new staff car park. Polytech evaluated the project requirements and advised contractor J Breheny to use Poly GRC, a robust channel system that would deliver the required performance in all areas of the parking facility.
Project scope
The profile of the new staff car park at Colchester General Hospital spanned a wide area with a variety of different drainage points. However, the original channel drainage specification did not account for the range of loadings that could pass through all areas because of a through-access traffic flow system.
As such, Polytech advised contractors J Breheny to adopt a cost effective channel drainage system that would offer high load bearing capacities, and resistance to breakage, across the whole project.
Taking Polytech’s expert advice, J Breheny installed Poly GRC, a glass reinforced concrete channel system that offers a robust alternative to traditional polymer concrete and helps reduce on-site wastage by minimising the risk of damage. The decision to change to Poly GRC was simple as it offered low material cost at the same time as high load bearing capacities.
The boltless locking system of Poly GRC makes it efficient to install and maintain, as the channel grating is easily secured or released using a simple lever key. This was an important consideration as the car park is a public sector concern where it is essential the grounds are maintained in line with health and safety guidelines.
Benefits
- Designed for heavily loaded applications
- Robust alternative to traditional polymer concrete
- Superior strength offers greater resistance to breakages and greater tolerance during installation
- Effective and economical drainage solution
